For the rest of  the world, Hainan is the largest island in the People's Republic of China , though Communist China considers Taiwan as largest island of  PRC,  and Hainan the second largest island. Hainan is also the smallest  province in the People's Republic of  China. It is located off the Southern coast of  China and is the Southernmost point in China

 Hainan has a  tropical climate with the lowest winter temperatures of  about 15 degrees Celsius and summer temperatures reaching 35 degree Celsius. The central region of  the island is mountainous and has lower temperatures.  The average summer rainfall is about 200 cm . Typhoons are common and cause flooding.

Most of  the rivers originate from the central mountains and flow towards the coast. Haikou is the capital of  Hainan . Sanya is located in the southern part of  Hainan is the other major city. In December 2004,  Hainan was connected to mainland China by the Guangdong - Hainan passenger railway link.
